Well, I don't know if it's because I've got holidays on the brain, but I'm really growing fond of coral accessories. I've always loved the colour, but now I'm starting to appreciate it as home decor items. Are you into the coral craze as well?

Well, hello there, 2012. So nice to see you. Please be a nice year, and don't go ending the world on us, ok? I've got lots of pretty things to buy and homes to decorate. Not to mention, daily doses of eye candy, and free advice for my dedicated readers.

Now, seeing as this is my first post of the new year, I thought I would start with the the number one question I get asked about decorating: "What do I do if I have no budget?"

I guess if you watch shows like Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or Million Dollar Decorators, you might be led to believe that you need a six figure budget before you can consider changing things up in your home.

Absolutely untrue. There are three easy, and nearly free things you can do to dramatically transform your home.

1. Declutter. Be ruthless about it too! Clear off any flat surfaces. Remove excessive knicknacks. Only keep what is useful and visually appealing.

2. Rearrange your furniture. Does the room flow or is your living room like a corn maze? Reposition pieces until room feels more spacious. Remove extra furniture if necessary.

3. Paint. Think of the impact colour has when you paint your nails or put on a coat of lipstick. It's instantly uplifting! The same goes for your home. You don't have to stop with your walls, doors and trim either. If you're brave, you can consider painting your furniture, cabinets and even your floors. But, not if they have carpet...ha ha ha

And to debunk the #1 Myth about decorating -- it doesn't have to be expensive. I can customize a design package that will suit any budget.

Spotlight on: Mary McDonald

If you've ever watched the over-the-top Bravo series Million Dollar Decorators, you're familiar with the dynamo that is Mary McDonald. She's a very memorable character with equally memorable style. If I were to compare my design esthetic to anyone's, it would be Mary McDonald's. We share a fondness for: bold patterns, pops of colour, liberal use of black and white, combining different furniture styles, symmetry and elegance.

We can all agree with Dorothy when she says, "There's no place like home." It's our refuge from the outside world and an environment that is perfectly tailored to the way we want to live. But, did you know that the air in your home is often 3-5 times more polluted than the air outside? In fact, it can even be up to 100 times more polluted, depending on the products and materials used within your four walls.

As an interior decorator, I must create designs for my clients that marry form with function. But, it is also imperative that I educate them on the impact some of their material and design choices will have on their health.

Did you know...

Carpet can be one of the most negative air quality factors in your home.

New carpet can be a source of chemical emissions. Carpet and the adhesives used in its installation emit volatile organic compounds. These chemicals may result in eye, nose and throat irritation; headaches; skin irritations; shortness of breath or cough; and even fatigue. Carpet can also act as a "sink" for chemical and biological pollutants including pesticides, dust mites, and fungi.

If you are looking to purchase new carpet, ask for lower emitting carpet, cushion, and adhesives. Before new carpet is installed, ask the retailer to unroll and air out the carpet in a clean, well-ventilated area. Opening doors and windows -- during and after installation -- will reduce exposure to most chemicals released from new carpet.

MDF is recognized as being the highest formaldehyde emitting pressed wood product.

Big box stores like Ikea, Home Depot and Walmart are filled with MDF furniture. The main allure of MDF is that it's light and affordable. Unfortunately, MDF products are also chock full of formaldehyde -- a known cause of asthma, and a possible carcinogen.

Formaldehyde products typically emit vapors for 7 to 8 years. However, the emissions are most detrimental during the year and the intensity gradually
eases up over the next 7 to 8 years.

Whether it be MDF, or real wood, consider buying your furniture second hand.

Vinegar kills 99% of bacteria, 82% of molds and 80% of viruses on contact.

You don't need an arsenal of expensive, chemical-laden, heavily scented and over packaged products to clean your home. Vinegar works as well on counter tops as it does on mirrors. Consider adding citrus zest to make your own pleasant, custom scent.

Potted plants aren't just pretty, they help to filter chemicals from the air.

Bringing in the "green" of plants will truly lead to a "greener" environment, in more ways than one. Houseplants can reduce components of indoor air pollution, even volatile organic compounds such as benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene. Plants also reduce airborne microbes and increase humidity. Click here to read the list of 10 plants recommended by NASA researchers.

I hate to admit it, but "neutral" is almost a dirty word in my vocabulary. From a design stand point, I love colour, contrast, bold pattern and plenty of shiny things. The Colour Purple

Repurposing Furniture

I tried my hand at furniture refinishing first when I was in my teens. There were definitely some questionable results. Read: I faux marbleized our family's kitchen table...in PEACH. God bless my mother for being so supportive.

Nowadays, my projects aren't quite as "flashy." Usually a quick coat of black or white paint, and I'm done. Check out some of my recent DIY's.

My husband needed a small, low stand for his stereo system. I didn't want something as bland as an MDF cube, so I hit the Goodwill stores. Et voila, I discovered this 1970s beauty for just $10.

I saw this piano bench ($12) and knew that it would make a great "catch all" table in my entry way.

We swapped out our large bookcases/entertainment unit in favour of a simple credenza. I found this solid wood darling for just $25 online. I added the hardware for an additional $25.

We like to have snacks while watching TV, but we don't have a coffee table or end tables to place our dishes on. I found this beat up breakfast tray for just $2.

I LOVE leopard print, but after 8 years, I needed a change. (I had also changed quite a few other elements in my condo, and the sofa/ottoman needed to play catch up.) I found this damask fabric at a local design shop, and then brought it to a seamstress to have it made into slip covers. I'm thrilled with the results.

Artist Profile: Tamara de Lempicka

Tamara de Lempicka was an Art Deco artist known for her richly coloured, sensual portraits of women. Crisp lines and jewel tones are hallmarks of her work.

I have two of her prints, hanging above my sofa. They are my absolute favourites: Printemps (left) and Autoportrait (right).

Colonel Mustard (Mood board)

Retro Eclectic

I love the mid-Century modern furniture used in this livingroom. The designer also successfully combined different elements (glass, wood, metal) and used asymmetry to keep it informal.

This purple pad is luxe to the max! The purples, lilacs and silvers work divinely with the 30's inspired theme. All of the finishes are soft, glossy and shiny which impart a feeling of wealth and glamour.

Rooms perfect for a princess, a siren and a queen!

For a Princess
This bedroom is soothing and simple. The calm palette of icy blues, snow white and silver is perfect for a classic chamber. I'm also a huge fan of upholstered headboards. And, like most rooms that I love, it has great symmetry.

For a Siren
This room reminds me of a 30's movies siren. What don't I love? The decor elements are so luxurious! The mirrored end tables, crystal lamps, velvet upholstered bed, exquisite wallpaper, shag area rug and the mohair pillow. WOW!

For a Queen

Thanks for stopping by. I thought we'd get acquainted a little by letting you know the who, what, where and why behind Rachellabelle Interiors.

Some of my earliest memories are about the visual appeal, or lack thereof, in my surroundings. I remember my first "big girl" bedroom design (circa 5 years of age) was a mix of primary colours and bold patterns. In fact, I think it was very IKEA inspired. My mom and auntie had converted my sister's nursery (still using her wallpaper as a jumping off point) into my red-blue-yellow paradise. They had painted a six drawer dresser with alternating colours in red and yellow, complemented by red, square mirrors hung above. I had a twin sized white bed, and red blanket with vertical white stripes. The whole palette was very bold and cheerful.

My bedroom got a redesign once I hit my "tween" phase (circa 11 years of age). The more juvenile palette of primary colours was replaced with a cornflower blue and cream scheme. The straight lines of the Swedish box store giant was replaced by alluring curves of French Provincial furniture. Also, gone were the bold patterns and stripes in favour of a more delicate floral print. I also remember having my first set of curtains. They were a divine set of full length, chiffon (ok, polyester), cornflower blue princess curtains! I had cream with blue floral wallpaper on every wall, and a nearly matching bed ensemble complete with shams, bows and ruffles. I looooved my bedroom. Even more so when they upgraded the gold shag carpet to an ivory shag. My bedroom was my own haven, sanctuary, and retreat: a place for everything and everything in its place.

Growing up in a small town in the 80's, I didn't have access to the internet (obviously) or loads of magazines. My design inspiration came from the ubiquitous Sears catalogue and my mother's Woman's Weekly magazines. Occasionally I would find items I would like and would place them into photo albums. (Do you remember the kind with the sticky cardboard sheets and clear film?)

Around the age of 13, I felt I was outgrowing my bedroom and wanted a "suite" in my parents' semi-finished basement. I remember drawing crude floor plans and creating an inspiration file. I was going to create a sitting/study room along with an adjacent sleeping area (complete with its own set of French doors). The suite never did come to fruition, but I can still recall my plans to this day.

I do have my own "suite" now in the form of a downtown condo. I finally have the French doors, large baseboards, crown moulding, coloured walls, dark floors, AND artwork that I've craved since childhood.

I have always been an intensely visual person: I love fashion, architecture, makeup and furniture. In 2011 I received my accreditation as an Interior Decorating and Design Professional. And the rest, as they say, is "her"story.
